Established in 1964 and commencing instruction in 1967, SUSLA has a longstanding commitment to providing accessible, quality education in Northwest Louisiana. As a member of the Southern University System — the only historically Black university system in the United States — SUSLA plays a pivotal role in advancing educational equity and workforce development. With accredited programs in allied health, business, and technology, the institution continues to adapt to the evolving needs of the community and the region.
The institution was established in 1867 through the efforts of nine formerly enslaved men who created one of the oldest Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the United States.
The nation’s only HBCU-accredited forensic science program operates at ASU which maintains academic excellence in STEM and criminal justice fields.
The university stands as a “Top Performer on Social Mobility” according to U.S. News & World Report because it provides students with access and opportunities that lead to better outcomes.
