Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) fosters a vibrant community rooted in resilience, unity, and service. Established in 1956 to provide higher education opportunities for African Americans in New Orleans, SUNO has a legacy of perseverance and growth. Despite challenges like Hurricane Katrina, the university reopened swiftly, demonstrating its commitment to education and community. Today, SUNO continues to lead with accredited programs in business, nursing, and social work, contributing significantly to workforce development and social mobility in the region.
Southern University at New Orleans was founded on September 4, 1956, and officially opened its doors on September 21, 1959.
SUNO’s Millie M. Charles School of Social Work is renowned for its impactful community engagement, generating approximately $1 million in volunteer service annually.
